The ESMINT Teaching Course established in 2006 by Isabel Wanke and Daniel Rufenacht, and being held in the past years in December in Barcelona will continue in the future as Advanced NeuroInterventional Course (ANIC,

About the Course

The European Course in Minimally Invasive Neurological Therapy (ECMINT) intends to teach trainees in Intervention Neuroradiology all the elements of the specialty curriculum as defined by the Neuroradiology subsection of the European Union of Medical Specialist (UEMS): will be covered in the first cycle. The first cycle will comprise 4 courses to be held at St Anne’s College, Oxford.

The dates of the first Cycle of ECMINT will be:-

ECMINT 1: 15th to 19th December 2014.

Places will assigned on a first come basis to members of ESMINT and early registration is advised because they will be limited to ensure that students receive the highest quality teaching experience.

Participate in new survey to update guidelines for acute stroke patients
16 June, 2014 - 16:41

STIR/VISTA Imaging is conducting a new survey to collect information about the imaging and treatment decisions that are typically made in standard acute patients in centres across the world. If you wish to participate in the survey please click on the link below.

As a result of the survey updated guidelines for imaging and treatment decisions in acute stroke will be published. The results will also be discussed at the next meeting, Thrombolysis and Thrombectomy in Acute Stroke Treatment (TTST), October 18-20 in Heidelberg\Mannheim.

We hope you will share the link with your colleagues, thank you if you have already participated.

6th ESMINT Teaching Course 2013 - Dec 7-11, Barcelona
23 February, 2014 - 13:47

The 6th ESMINT Teaching Course was held in Barcelona in December 2013. This 5 day course provides participants with access to the latest practical and interactive training in the continuously evolving area of minimally invasive treatment for intracranial aneurysms, stroke and AV-fistula. 96 enthusiastic attendees from 23 different countries worked together with seminar teachers, participating in discussions in small groups of 10-15 people. An experienced and highly regarded faculty presented the latest knowledge about techniques and trends, supported by richly illustrated case material.

ESMINT Teaching Course 2013

Daily keynote lectures with esteemed speakers provided in-depth learning about 4D-DSA (C. Strother, C. Mistretta), the vascular anatomy of the brain and the spinal cord (T. Naidich), anti-aggregation in acute stroke endovascular treatment (L. Asmis) and a critical analysis on failings in current evidence in favour of mechanical thrombectomy (M. Forsting). An overview of ESMINT research activities was also provided (F. Turjman).

Participants were also able to attend practical skills training workshops hosted by four companies from Industry where they received individual demonstrations of state-of-the-art equipment and insights into the latest technical developments.

ESMINT Teaching Course 2013

As part of our commitment to education, ESMINT Society is also developing a curriculum in Interventional Neuroradiology and a certification along the ESMINT and WFITN endorsed standards published as "Training of Future Interventional Neuroradiologists - The European Approach" (Stroke. 2012; 43:2810-2813). These efforts are being coordinated in collaboration with the Division of Neuroradiology/Radiology Section UEMS.

Unlike the currently available ESNR diploma (EDiNR), it is our aim that this certification in Interventional Neuroradiology will be recognised by the European Board of Neuroradiology. (A collaboration involving ESMINT and UEMS/Division of Neuroradiology that was initiated following the publication of the UEMS standards).

If you are a member of ESMINT you can access the presentations from the course on our web site here. If you are not already a member we hope you will consider joining the ESMINT Society at your earliest convenience and becoming part of this joint effort to improve training and advance minimally invasive treatment of neurological diseases!

Last month in Nice we celebrated the 5th anniversary of the ESMINT Congress. This year's conference was particularly inspiring and educational thanks to the joint day with our friends from neurosurgery and the interesting discussions on stroke that gave us some important strategic directions for further studies. We also learned a great deal about the diversity of medicine from all over Europe.

Your case submissions make our meeting really interesting and useful so a huge thank you to everyone who participated; the sharing of your knowledge and experiences is very important for our society.

While the annual Congress is clearly a highlight of our society’s activity, ESMINT offers its members much more. By joining the society you can become part of a joint effort to improve and advance minimally invasive treatment of neurological disease, particularly at the dawn of successful treatment of acute ischemic stroke!

If you are already a member of ESMINT you can sign in to to view the case presentations and photos from this year's congress. If you are not yet a member, we urge you to join us; the sooner the better! It is worth being part of ESMINT now!

Thanks for coming to Nice, we hope to see many of you in Barcelona at the ESMINT Teaching Course soon in December.

ESMINT Congress 2013

Congress Highlights

The goal of this year's conference was to provide a platform for debate about the present and future of neurovascular disease management with perspectives from different specialisms.

A major highlight was the first ever joint meeting with the Vascular section of the EANS (European Association of Neurological Surgeons) and this new initiative was very much welcomed by the representatives of both interventional and open surgical neurovascular specialists.

The two main topics of the joint meeting were the management of giant aneurysms and brain arteriovenous malformations. The surgical and interventional lectures on giant aneurysm disease gave clear insight to both surgical and endovascular reconstructive and obstructive treatment modalities.

Interesting case discussions followed and allowed for in-depth assessment of common problems related to this disease group. The AVM section focused on endovascular, surgical and radiosurgical management of brain AVMs.

On the second day we looked at acute stroke management, an area of increasing importance. The diverse group of presenters created a lively forum for a meaningful exchange of information, including topics like specific imaging, acute treatment modalities, new studies and future perspectives.

Based on the presented data a consensus was achieved that only well-designed studies, with accurate patient selection, are able to show the usefulness of acute endovascular stroke therapy.

On the final day our colleagues from Central-Eastern European countries highlighted the problems they face, and will continue to face while trying to implement state-of-the-art interventional therapies. The programme finished with discussions on intra-aneurysmal flow disruption modalities, intracranial venous disease management and skull-base tumor management.

A great strength of our meeting is its informal style with expert referrals on the hottest topics followed by difficult/interesting case presentations. Debate has always been a positive characteristic of our community, and this collaborative atmosphere ensured heated discussions continued throughout the three days!

Save the date for the 6th Annual Congress that will be taking place in Nice from the 4th-6th September 2014. We look forward to seeing you there!
